Why I built PricePinner

The story behind PricePinner: why we built a free game about real Swedish home prices, and what we wanted players to learn.

In Sweden, home prices are a national hobby. People talk about them at dinner, at work and on walks. Everyone has a strong opinion. Almost nobody checks if their opinion is right.

The question

I wanted to know how good people really are at guessing home prices. I also wanted to know how good I was. The answer, at first, was: not very good.

The idea

A game. Real homes that really sold. You guess, you see the real price at once, and you get a score. Simple.

The twist

I added one more idea: your score depends on where you stand. The closer you are to the home, the more points you get. A walk becomes part of the game. That made it something new.

The rules I set

  • Only real homes and real final prices.
  • No ads.
  • No paid boosts.
  • Public scoring.

Where it is now

PricePinner is free on iPhone and Android, with homes in Sweden, in English and Swedish. It is still a small project, and feedback from players shapes every update.
