Why big numbers all feel the same

3 million and 4 million kronor feel almost the same, but the difference is large. Learn why big numbers confuse us.

Three very tall towers of coins look almost the same height, with a ruler that shows the difference

For most people, 3 million kronor and 4 million kronor feel almost the same. Both are "a lot". That makes home prices hard to judge.

The problem

Our brains handle small numbers well. A coffee for 40 or 50 kronor feels different. A home for 3.1 or 3.4 million does not feel very different, but the difference is 300 000 kronor.

The fix: make it smaller

  • Think in price per square metre.
  • Think in monthly cost.
  • Think in percent: 10 % of the price.

In the game

The price score uses percent. A guess 10 % off gives 27 of 30 points, whatever the price. That trains you to think in percent, which is how big numbers become real.
