Why standing close to the home gives more points

The distance part of the score is half of every round. Here is why, and how to use it.

Glowing rings spread out from a red house; one player stands near it and one far away

Half of every score in PricePinner comes from one thing: where you stand when you guess.

The rule

You get all 50 distance points when you stand within 200 metres of the home. Further away, the points go down on a curve. One kilometre away still gives 41 points. Ten kilometres away gives 27.

Why we made it this way

The best way to know what a home is worth is to see where it is. You see the street, the traffic, the trees, the shops and the bus stop. You hear the noise or the quiet. A map cannot give you all of that.

We wanted a game that sends you outside. A walk past a home that you are curious about is the best kind of round.

It does not punish you much

The curve is kind for short distances. A guess from the next block costs nothing. A guess from one kilometre away costs about ten points. A guess from across town, about 5 km away, costs about 20 points. A guess from another city costs much more.

So you can still play from your sofa. You just leave some points on the table.

How to use it

  • Play homes on your way to work or school.
  • Plan a short walk past three or four sold homes.
  • On holiday, play the homes near where you stay.

The real reward

The points are nice. But the bigger reward is the knowledge. After a few walks you know your area better than most people who live there.
