Designing a fair score

How we designed the PricePinner score: 50 points for distance, 30 for price accuracy and 20 for hints that you do not open.

Level balance scales hold three coloured blocks on one side and a gold trophy on the other

The score is the heart of a game. Here is how we designed the PricePinner score.

Goals

  • Reward real knowledge of prices.
  • Reward going outside and looking.
  • Reward confidence.
  • Be easy to understand.
  • Be public.

Three parts

  • Distance: 50 points.
  • Price: 30 points.
  • Clues not opened: 20 points.

Why distance is the biggest part

It is what makes PricePinner different. And seeing a home in its street is the best way to know its price.

Why price is "only" 30

We wanted a guess that is a bit off to still feel good. A guess 10 % off keeps 27 of 30 points. A wild guess is not a disaster.

Why clues cost points

Without a cost, everyone would open every clue, and Detailed mode would have no choices in it. The cost makes each clue a decision.

Open to change

We listen to players. If the balance feels wrong, tell us.
