Why a log curve for distance

A short note on why the distance score falls slowly at first and fast later.

A ball rolls down a curved slide that is steep near a house and flat far away

The distance score in PricePinner is logarithmic. We tried other curves first.

A straight line

From 50 points at 0 km to 0 points at 1000 km. Within a city, everyone would get about 50 points. The distance part would mean nothing.

A short straight line

From 50 points at 0 km to 0 points at 10 km. Now distance matters in a city, but anyone outside the city gets 0, which feels unfair.

A log curve

The log curve cares about how many times further away you are. From 200 m to 2 km costs the same as from 2 km to 20 km. That fits how people move: walking, then local trips, then travel.

The numbers

  • 200 m: 50 points
  • 1 km: 41 points
  • 10 km: 27 points
  • 100 km: 14 points
  • 1000 km: 0 points

The feeling

A short walk is rewarded. Playing from home is fine. Playing from another city costs a lot. That is the balance that we wanted.
