Automated tests on an Android emulator

How we test every PricePinner release with automated tests on an Android emulator in Docker before it reaches a phone.

A small robot taps a phone on a stand, and green check marks rise from the screen

Manual testing is slow and easy to forget. So we let a script do it.

The setup

An Android emulator runs in Docker. A script installs the app, opens it, taps through the main screens and checks what it sees. At the end it writes a report.

What it checks

The main paths that every player uses: signing in, the map and its pins, a full round from pick to score, and the screens after it.

Two clean runs

A test that passes once may pass by luck. We require two clean runs in a row before we trust a release.

Why emulator first

Testing on an emulator is fast and repeatable. Real phones come after, for things that an emulator cannot show.

The result

Fewer surprises for players, and calmer weekends for us.
