The math behind the distance points

The distance score follows a logarithmic curve. Here is the formula and what it means.

A row of bars drops fast at first and then slowly, like a log curve, with a ruler in front

The distance part of the PricePinner score is not a straight line. It follows a logarithmic curve.

The formula

  • At 200 metres or closer: 50 points.
  • At 1000 km or more: 0 points.
  • In between: 50 × (1 − ln(d / 0.2) / ln(1000 / 0.2)), with d in kilometres.

What this means in practice

  • 200 m: 50 points
  • 1 km: 41 points
  • 5 km: 31 points
  • 10 km: 27 points
  • 100 km: 14 points
  • 1000 km: 0 points

Why a log curve?

A straight line would be unfair. If 1000 km gave 0 points, a straight line would give 49.9 points at 1 km and the distance part would mean nothing in a city.

A log curve cares about how many times further you are, not how many metres. Going from 200 m to 2 km costs as much as going from 2 km to 20 km. Both are ten times further.

The takeaway

The first steps matter most. Moving from across town to the right neighbourhood gives you many points. Moving from the corner to the front door gives you only a few.
